Hi, An A.E meter is short for Automatic Exposure meter. The meter is built into the camera, and takes readings of the subject automatically, usually when the user has focused on the subject. These meters are extremely accurate in determinig the overall exposure of the subject but can be fooled by extremes, such as a dark background and a light foreground etc; However the camera makers have thought of this and include various methods of overcoming these problems including Partial area metering,Spot metering, and Exposure control of parts of the subject via Honeycomb metering. Each manufacturer has its' own system, with many different methods. It would take too long to go through all thede, so I suggest if you are really interested in the tecnical side, that you get hold of Kodake excellet encyclopedia of Photography from your library...Cheers Dave
