Depends.

Because alkaline batteries do not exhibit the characteristics to be classified as a reactive or ignitable waste; and because the batteries pass the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) test; and because the batteries do not meet the required definitions to be a corrosive waste, alkaline batteries are not hazardous waste under Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). (Mercury was phased out of alkaline batteries in conjunction with the "Mercury-Containing and Rechargeable Battery Management Act," passed in 1996)

States can be more restrictive than the federal government, but most states classify alkaline batteries according to RCRA regulations. However, some states, have more rigorous regulations. The hazardous waste characterization requirements of Alaska, California, Minnesota, Rhode Island and Washington include a bioassay component. Additional states such as South Carolina regulates all types of batteries as special waste.

Alkaline batteries can contain very small amounts of Mercury, even as the amount has been greatly reduced in the past 40 years as manufacturing techniques improved.

Though alkaline batteries can be disposed of normally, this is harmful to the environment and they should be either recycled or disposed of as hazardous waste.

Some states in the U.S. even prohibit the dumping of alkaline batteries as normal waste, but this is difficult to enforce.

Yes. A local Batteries Plus store recycles for a fee. They can be thrown away into our landfill for free and the government says that it is safe to do so..

Comparing Lithium Batteries To Alkaline Batteries?

Lithium batteries use some type of lithium in their construction and are different from more traditional alkaline batteries. One of the key features of lithium batteries is the increase in the amount of electricity that is produced from a certain size of battery when compared to alkaline batteries. This feature also has a drawback, however, since a lithium battery can have a very harmful reaction when short circuited inside of a device. This can actually cause the battery to discharge electricity and heat very quickly, potentially igniting the battery itself.

Are alkaline batteries really poisonous?

Alkaline batteries are extremely poisonous. You should keep them away from kids and pets. When they're done you should dispose of them properly. It's illegal to put them in your trash. ya alkaline batteries are poisonous because the cells of the alkaline batteries are highly poisoned codes answer by www,batteries4laptop.com To get more information on laptop batteries visit here www.batteries4laptop.com

Does alkaline batteries have more power or does lithium batteries have more power?

lithium batteries have a faster current discharge rate then alkaline batteries but they cost more. The LIPO battery is used the most in RC planes.

What is the source of alkaline in batteries?

The electrolyte used in alkaline dry cell batteries is usually potassium hydroxide. The main advantage of the alkaline potassium hydroxide electrolyte over the acidic ammonium chloride electrolyte in conventional dry cell batteries is that if it happens to leak outside the battery case it will not corrode the metal parts of the device it is powering (but the leakage still makes a mess that should be cleaned out when replacing the bad batteries with good ones).

How does the type of battery affect how long it will last?

This is not necessarily true. Usually the brand of battery is not as important as the technology used. An alkaline battery should last longer than a regular carbon battery, no matter what the brand.
