Not really. Volcanoes, just like coal-fired power stations, produce sulphur dioxide gas. Everyone knows that this gas dissolves in water to produce sulphuric acid, aka battery acid, which dissolves flesh and most metals, and destroys forests. Well, everyone, that is, except all chemists, almost all other scientists, and any fifteen-year-old who paid attention in his High School inorganic chemistry class. We all knowthat sulphur dioxide dissolves in water to produce sulphurous acid. Sulphurous acid is not the same as sulphuric acid. It is a weak acid, ( not aka battery acid ), which does not dissolve flesh, nor most metals. It does destroy forests and is not very good for your lungs. Why all this? Well, to make sulphuric acid, you must first make sulphur trioxide, which you then dissolve in water. It's easy to make sulphur dioxide - just get some sulphur and put a match to it. It is not so easy to make the trioxide, and finding out how to do it was one of the big breakthroughs in chemistry. Volcanoes do not know how to do this, for which the Lord be thanked.
