this is advice for an Automatic transmission hold brake put in N let car roll for a foot or so then put in Park then turn key to off position this should un lock transmission lock on ignition

I have 2008 and had same problem the ignition had to be replaced was really fast less than an hour they did it.
If the battery is dead it will not allow the key to return to locked position. Thus trapping you key in the ignition.

Most likely the anti-theft device at work. Try turning the steering wheel slightly then try turning the key.
