Kitty litter is a cheap an effective way. Get the kitty litter that is like fine sand. You can put it on anything and it will absorb the mildew odor. Leave it for at least 3 hours (longer if you can) then vacuum up. Kitty litter is also good to carry in the trunk of your car if you live in a place that has a lot of snow.
