The subscript in a chemical formula, such as the number 2 in H2O, simply tells you how many atoms of the preceding element (i.e. the one before the subscript, Hydrogen in this case) are present in one molecule. The O (Oxygen) in this chemical formula has no subscript. So, it is assumed to be 1. Therefore, there is only one oxygen atom present per molecule.

If the element is by itself in an equation and has a charge (Cl-, K+, Mg2+, etc.), then this just indicates that those ion are in the solution. Since there not bound to anything else, there's no need to have a subscript.

Really, it boils down to this. The subscripts tell you the number of atoms in a molecule of given compound. If there's no subscript, then there is only one atom of the preceding element (see above) in the compound.

Hope this helps!

it is 1:1. Like LiCl it has no subscripts and hence the ratio between Li atoms and Cl atoms per formula unit is 1:1

What do the subscripts in the formula for ethane represent?

subscripts in a formula indicates the number of atoms in a molecule or the ratio of elements in a compound.

What is the difference between a subscript and a coefficient in a chemical formula?

The subscripts tell you how the atoms are bound together. The coefficient tells you how many atoms there are.

Which number in a chemical equation shows you the number of atoms?

The coefficient times the subscripts in a chemical formula show you the number of atoms of each element for each substance in the equation.

How many atoms does thiamine monoitrate have?

Thiamine mononitrate has the chemical formula of C12H17CINO3S. By adding all of the subscripts the number of atoms can be found. This means each molecule has 36 atoms.

Is a chemical formula a way of writing the name of a compound using chemical symbols?

Yes, a chemical formula is a way of representing the composition of a compound using chemical symbols and subscripts. It shows the types and number of atoms present in the compound. For example, the chemical formula of water is H2O, indicating that it is composed of two hydrogen (H) atoms and one oxygen (O) atom.

What is the total number of atoms of carbon in the formula K3FeCN6?

In chemical formulas, carbon atoms are denoted with the symbol C. Subscripts and superscripts denote the number of carbons. Since there is only one C and no subscripts or superscripts, the compound stated contains only one carbon atom.

What care subscripts used for in chemical formulas?

*are Subscripts are used to show the ratio of one element to another in a molecule. For example, one molecule of H2O has two H atoms and one O atom. Similarly, two molecules of H2O have a formula of 2H2O, where there are 4 H atoms and 2 O atoms
