Meyer, Julius Lothar1830-95, German chemist. He taught at Breslau, Karlsruhe, and Tübingen (from 1876) and is known especially for his work in the development of the periodic law, for which, with Mendeleev, he received the Davy medal in 1882. Lothar Meyer's periodic table did not account for all known elements and did not correctly predict the properties of undiscovered elements. Additionally, it did not account for the concept of atomic number, which led to inconsistencies in the ordering of elements. Meyer's table also lacked a clear underlying periodic trend.

Julius Lothar von Meyer was a German chemist. He was contemporary and competitor of Dmitri Mendeleev to draw up the first periodic table of chemical elements. Meyer is best known for the share he had in the periodic classification of the elements. He noted that if they are arranged in the order of their atomic weights they fall into groups in which similar chemical and physical properties are repeated at periodic intervals; and in particular he showed that if the atomic weights are plotted as ordinates and the atomic volumes as abscissae, the curve obtained presents a series of maxima and minima, the most electro-positive elements appearing at the peaks of the curve in the order of their atomic weights.
