BrF3 does not follow the octet rule. Both Br and F have seven valence electrons, so the Lewis structure will have a total of 28 electrons, or 14 electron pairs. Br is the central atom, connected to each F atom by a single bond. 3 lone electron pairs will surround each F atom, and 2 lone electron pairs will be on the Br atom.

The Lewis structure for 1,2 - dibromoethylene starts with a pair of doubly bonded C atoms in the center. Each carbon then has two single bonds, one attached to an H atom, the other attached to a Br atom. Each Br atom then has three pairs of dots.

We know that Aluminum has three (3) valence electrons and Bromine has seven (7) valence electrons. To figure out the total number of valence electrons in the molecule before drawing the structure we do the following:

V = 3 + (7 x 3)

V = 24 electrons in AlBr3

Now we can draw a simple Lewis structure:

Br - Al - Br

Each Bromine has one single bond with Aluminum and 3 lone pairs of electrons. If we calculate that each bond is two electrons and each Bromine has 6 electrons (3 lone pairs) then:

6 + 6 + 6 (from the Bromine atoms) + 2 + 2 + 2 (from the three bonds) = 24 electrons

Start with a single C atom in the middle. On each side attach a single bond that is connected to a Br atom. Each Br atom then has a pair of dots on the unbonded sides.
