The chemical that is added to propane to make it have that rotten smell is Methanethiol. It is released for some types of plants when they are rotting. Methanethiol gas is listed on the Material Safety Data Sheet to be flammable, so if there is a large amount of gas hanging in the air it has the potential to combust.

Propane is naturally odorless. Chemicals are added to it to aid people in detecting leaks. Depending on what chemicals were used to odorize the propane, it may smell similar to butane or natural gas.
