Let us use the expression = time duration = number of half lives x half life

Given 40 = 4 x half life

So half life = 10 days.

Remaining = 1/16 = (1/2)4. So 4 half live have gone.

If the number of half lives is n then (1/2)n would remain.

Does the process of radioactive decay fall under the study of chemistry or physics or is it a combination of both?

Radioactive decay falls under chemistry, because the chemical properties of the substance are changed during radioactive decay.

What is changed in the original substance during a chemical reaction?

It all depends on what chemicals you are using. For example, if you were using sulfur & carbon, either one could be changed.

How the radioactive decay rate be changed?

The rate cannot be changed.

Is it true that a substance produced during a chemical change cannot easily be changed back into the original substance?

generally no, but sometimes yes. if one or more of the products is insoluble or otherwise removes itself from the other products, then the reaction is considered irreversible.
