The 'hardness' of water is an expression used to convey the amount of mineral content dissolved in the water. The hard water minerals dissolved in the water are primarily calcium (Ca2+), and magnesium (Mg2+) metal cations. Soft water has very little dissolved minerals, Hard water has allot of dissolved minerals and usually comes form a limestone source.

When hard water is heated or evaporated these minerals come out of solution and form deposits in kettles, pipes, washing machines etc.

I own a guinea pig, and I only let him drink Soft water. So I buy Spring Water for his bottle because hard water will cause problems with his body and will block the drinking tube on his bottle.

Yes.

The "hardness" of water is by definition the level of mineral content in the water.

Distilled water has all (or nearly all) of its mineral content removed.

Tap water (and all normal drinking water) has at least some measure of mineral content, without minerals water typically tastes a bit off or dead against the tongue.

The actual label of "Hard" water is typically reserved for extremely high mineral content, but standard tap water and any bottled water intended for drinking is going to have at least some minerals just so that it tastes decent enough to drink and is therefore at least slightly harder than distilled which is a process intended to remove as much of the mineral content as possible.

This is why most steamer, cleaning products and such recommend the use of distilled water because this "softer" water will leave behind less mineral residue when the water is steamed off or drys.

Tap water as with any water that has minerals will leave behind more residue and mineral staining if steamed away or allowed to dry on a surface. (tap water or hard water used inside a steamer for example would eventually coat the entire inside surface with mineral residue, reducing its effectiveness or causing overheating and potential fire hazard)
