Some people think carbon monoxide C=O is also an organic molecule (and why shouldn't it), then this is the simplest, but propyn C2H2 also has lesser atoms in one molecule than methane.

In traditional chemistry we would say a molecule. However modern usage reserves that term for covalent substances, so perhaps 'formula unit' may suffice.
