For e.g sodium(Na) releases its one electron which is transfered to the deserving chlorine atom(Cl). So, chlorine becomes negatively charged and the sodium atom becomes a positive ion(Na+). This is the case when electrons are completely transfered from sodium to chlorine and ionic bond is formed i.e NaCl. Moreover, when electrons are shared between atoms covalent bonds may form.
