This is a classic electrophilic addition reaction and can be carried out with any of the halogens except fluorine which just explodes and ruins the whole thing! What's actually happening is that bromine becomes polarised on approach to the hexene double bond due to the pi bond electrons. These 'attack' the positively charged side of the bromine molecule forming a bromonium ion and leaving a negatively charged bromide ion.
