Diffusion is the movement of molecules across a selectively permeable layer from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. In cells, this can happen without the use of energy from the cell. Only molecules of certain sizes and attributes can diffuse. Others may need to be facilitated or moved via active transport (using energy).
