Only a pure resolving agent may be used. If a racemic mixture is used then the product will result in 4 different spatial arrangements 2 of which will be enatiomers. The whole purpose of the experiment is to convert enantiomers (which have similar physical properties) into diasteromers (which have different physical properties). Taking advantage of the differences the two diasteromers will then be separated by an appropriate technique thus leaving one with only one enatiomer.
