Gold has several properties that make it a useful metal. It is almost incredibly malleable and is capable of being hammered into a sheet approaching a single atom in thickness, it does not corrode in normal environments, it is a very good conductor of heat and electricity, and it is distinctive in its color and sheen. It is also very rare. I read long ago that all of the gold ever mined would fit in a cube 50 feet on a side.
