Along with spices, salt was valuable commodity in earlier centuries because of its flavor. Salt was used in various trading and was quite rare at the time -and pricey. But as time progressed, salt came to be an average flavoring it is now, known as table salt.

It was also a preservative in which it lengthens the lifespan of foods, usually meats.

Also, there was no such thing as refrigeration and there was no way to protect things from nature; it was used to preserve food such as meat over long periods of time such as winter. It was hard to get a hold of because it had to be mined which took a lot of work. At some points in history it was even more valuable than gold.

Additionally, it was used by some groups as a natural antiseptic/antibacterial. The ancient Middle Eastern people used salt to rub on new born children and they had some of the lowest infant mortality rates of that time.

It is also used as a type of friction producer. Mainly as an abrasive. Such as for grinders. It is also used in the making of certain ice creams.
