Protons are positive and the electrons are negative. Neutrons are neutral. Now we have the basis of the atomic particle charges. The atomic number is equal to the number of protons which is equal to the number of electrons. So if there are five positive particles and five negative ones, they balance each other out. With the acceptation of ions but that would take too long for me to type!

some atoms have positive or negative charges, called ions, because of an unbalence in protons or electrons. the reason for having positive, negative, or zero charge is beause the protons and electrons may or may not balence each other out. if they do, the atom has no charge. if there are more protons than electrons, it has a positive charge and vice versa

Basically among all the particles present inside the core of an atom, the particles that bring a major difference in charge are the electrons and the protons(even though there is a presence of quarks,leptons,neutrino,muons,muons neutrino, tau, tau neutrino but they do not contribute much to the neutrality when compared to electrons and protons).

As the number of electrons and protons are equal it remains neutral and stable.

Most atoms don't have charges. This is because while they individual components have charges (protons and electrons), they both have the same total charge and thus cancel each other out. Leaving the atom neutral.
