Most colloidal suspensions have a size small enough not to be affected by gravity and the thermal forces give their motion. In the case of charged colloids, a diffuse layer is forming around the particles, composed mostly by counter-ions (small ions of opposite sign). These counter-ions are subject to attraction toward the surface by the opposite charge and are depleted from the surface by the thermal forces. When two charged colloidal particles approach each other, a repulsive force results, due to the overlap of these diffuse layers. This repulsive force does not allow for the particles to get in contact and aggregate. Without addition of salt or oppositely charged polymers, a colloidal suspension which is not affected by gravity can stay stable indefinitely.

A colloid is not a true solution because the size of solute particles in colloidal solution are larger than the size of solute particles in True solutions. And unlike True solution colloid scatter beam of light and renders its path visible.

What is a colloid and what is an example?

A colloid is an example of a mixture. Specifically, colloids are mixtures in which the components do not separate. Mixtures in which the components do separate are known as suspensions.

How do you separate particles of a colloid?

By dialysis

Why cant you separate a colloid by filtering?

You cannot separate a colloid by filtering because the particles of a colloid are too small to be suspended by any filter. They will instead simply slip through the holes of said filter.

Does stirring a electrolyte into a colloid stabilize the colloid?

No, it leads to separation of its components, specially in case of high electolyte concentrations.
