A: As temperature increases its resistance increases. Like all silicon diodes it will reach a point where the temperature coefficient is zero but it is at such elevated temperature to make it invaluable
It was made my heating several minerals at high temperatures. EDIT: History has it some Arabs were cooking on sand, and noticed lumps of meted material in the ash after the fire cooled. The sodium carbonate in the ash (similar to laundry detergent) allowed the silica (silicon dioxide)in the sand to melt at a lower temperature. Nowadays, the chemicals used are generally calcium carbonate (lime; like chalk) and lead salts to make it sparkle. The lime and soda are called :"flux" to allow the silica to, again, melt at a lower temperature.
