In cellulose, glucose monomers are added to produce linear polymer chains that can align side by side, favouring interchain hydrogen bonding. These interchain links produce a rigid structure of layered sheets of cellulose. This bulky and inflexible structure no only imparts exceptional stregnth to cellulose, it also renders it insoluble in water. It is, of course, essential for plants that their main building material does not readily dissolve in water!

Graphite is not easily dissolved. Here is an article describing on process in the related link.

What do diamond graphite and buckminsterfullerene have in common?

Diamond, graphite, and buckminsterfullerene are made of pure carbon and are insoluble in water.

What are the example of insoluble?

graphite in water, nickel in alcohol, diamond in methanol

Why is pencil insoluble?

Pencils are insoluble in water because the main components of a pencil, graphite and clay, do not dissolve in water. Graphite is a form of carbon that is extremely stable and does not react with water, while clay is also insoluble in water. This is why pencils can be used to write on paper without smudging when they come into contact with water.

What does diamond coal graphite cokeand buckminsterfullerene have in common?

Diamond, coal, graphite, coke and buckminsterfullerene are composed primarily of carbon and are insoluble in water.

Why is graphite insoluble in hexane?

Graphite is insoluble in hexane because graphite is a giant covalent structure where carbon atoms are bonded to each other by strong covalent bonds. Hexane is a nonpolar solvent, and it cannot break the strong covalent bonds in graphite to dissolve it.

Is graphite carbon soluble in acid?

Graphite is largely insoluble in acids, including common mineral acids like hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid. The strong covalent bonds between carbon atoms in graphite make it highly resistant to dissolution in acidic environments. However, in some very strong oxidizing acids, like nitric acid, graphite can undergo some oxidation and get partially dissolved.

Why graphite is used in making electrodes?

Graphite is a non metallic conductor of electricity so is cheap, insoluble in water, acids and bases, and is non corrosive material.

What is a physical property of a giant covalent structure?

+ High melting and boiling points+ Insoluble in water and organic solvents+ Do not conduct electricity (except when they have free electrons eg graphite)+ Solid at room temperature

What is a insoluble?

Insoluble refers to a substance that does not dissolve in a particular solvent, typically water. These substances tend to remain in a solid state when added to the solvent and do not form a homogenous mixture. Examples of insoluble compounds include certain minerals like sand and graphite.
