He is not mentioned in the quintessential Clausism poem- The Night before Christmas by Clement Moore- there are eight tiny reindeer- and they are named in the poem, Rudolph is not in the list. He was created by a catalog copy-right artist for I believe Montgomery Ward in the late thirties or early forties- they wanted a mascot to keep interest alive in the toy section and why not a Reindeer! (this being Christmas) the Hank Ketchum (may have misspelt his last name) character Dennis the Menace played a similar (advance man) role for Sears in the sixties and clever Dennis notations and Cartoons(one showing Dennis with Gina !) peopled the marginals of the Wishbook- Good cheer indeed!
