On the copyright page usually on the second or fourth page you will see a series of numbers usually under the ISBN number... it will look something like 09 08 07 RRD 01 02 03 04.... this example means year 2007 printing at RR Donnelly 01 is first printing. They put the 02.... and the 08..... to make reprints and updates easier.
It will say "First Edition" on one of the first inside pages. Look closely, it is in small print. A more important question will be be...which "state" is it in, by that I mean is it a 1st printing, 2nd printing, 3rd printing etc. They are all first editions, but the 1st printing of this particular volume is worth pretty big bucks: $700-$1,000 or more. The only way to tell it is a true 1st printing is if the dedication page is left off. It was an error that was corrected in the 2nd printing. Scarce...look for this volume!

You can usually tell if your book is a first edition copy. The pages would be more thick and a yellowish color.
If a card is 1st edition, it will say so, it will have '1st edition' written on it. The concept of 1st edition only applies for cards in booster sets, including Duelist Packs though - promo cards never have '1st edition' even if they were the first printing of that card.
To determine if you have a first edition Dr. Seuss book, you can check the copyright page for the year the book was originally published. Additionally, look for any specific first edition printing information provided by the publisher. Other indicators may include the presence of original dust jackets or special binding features unique to the first edition.

A "print run " is the term given to the number of a comic book that was initially printed and sold. Depending on the popularity of a comic book , one issue may have up to 3 printings (slightly different versions of the same comic book). Each "printing" is slightly different the original that way collectors can tell what printing it is. !st printing is always worth the most , then 2nd , 3rd etc...
