3, the 3 little pigs, Goldie locks and the 3 bears, and its more than that...

The most common "magical" numbers are 3, 7, 12 in Fairy Tales. Here are some ways that they are used:

  • Cinderella & stepsisters = 3
  • Always 3 brothers and youngest wins princess/prize (ie. Puss in Boots)
  • Snow White and the 7 dwarfs
  • Twelve Dancing Princesses
  • The Wild Swans: 6 brothers + 1 sister = 7
  • The 7 Swans; The 7 Ravens
  • Rumpelstiltskin; 3 tasks, 3 tries to guess Rumpelstiltskin's name
  • Sleeping Beauty: 7 or 12 fairies depending on version; 3 in Disney
  • East of the Sun, West of the Moon: 3 gifts/ 3 tries to get Prince's attention
  • Cap O' Rushes- 3 dresses/ 3 balls/ 3 gifts to the master
  • Always 3 wishes
  • Jack and the Giant Beanstalk- stole 3 things; 3 magical beans
