Uglies takes place in a futuristic world with advanced technology and a different social ladder from what we have today.

In the third book (Specials), it mentions that Tally's town is close to Death Valley. And since Death Valley is a desert located in Eastern California, I'm going to make a guess she lived in a city just outside of there.

The Ugly Series portays the concepts of true beauty. It is about a civilization were at a certain age, kids go through drastic surgery and become "beautiful. Then they can join the rest of the pretties who live in another area. The story follows a girl who is about to go through her surgery but fate has other plans as she meets a guy from outside the city who lives in the wild and is not "pretty" though by his age he should be. He along with people who rebell against the whole idea of surgery that has enslaved the minds of an entire socitey. The thing is when the kids go through this "surgery" they implant some kind of mind control chip where you don't have a free mind, you are compled to follow society. I would read the whole series if I were you it's really good.
