In Germany two brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, collected folktales from all over the country and published them in the an anthology, now known as Grimm's Fairy Tales
The grimm brothers.
This brilliant website in the Related Links offers various Cinderella stories from around the world including the first version of Cinderella and the Grimm brother's version.
In Snow White, Cinderella, The Little Mermaid, and Aladdin the mothers died, but in Sleeping Beauty, Princess and the Frog, Tangled, and Princess and the Frog they are alive. I believe the reason that the first stories did not have the mothers in the stories are because they would not be able to explain why their mothers did not make sure they were safe, therefore ruin the story. Just my opinion.
Charles Perrault (1628-1703) of France originally wrote and published the first version of Cinderella in 1697. His Mother Goose collection also included Little Red Riding Hood, and Sleeping Beauty.

To begin with Little Red was not a written tale, it was a tale somewhat similar to our ghost stories, just with more of a point to it. The original Little Red was never (from what i have seen) written. The first writing of it would be the Grimm version, and that is not in the slightest bit the same thing as the original.
