Versions of the song date to before 1781.

Mozart, who knew it as a "French" folk tune called "Ah, vous dirai-je, maman". wrote a set of piano variations for it.

The first copyrighted version was published in 1835 by Charles Bradlee of Boston. Its long title was "The A.B.C., a German air with variations for the flute with an easy accompaniment for the piano forte." Note that in this publication, it is credited as a "German" folk tune - it is doubtful if anyone really knows which country it originally came from (if either). That is very common with old folk tunes.

The Alphabet Song was written by Charles Bradlee. Louis Le Maire was credited by Bradlee as the composer of the song, which happens to have the same tune as Baa, Baa Black Sheep and Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.
