Mona asked her what is in her skirt and then the mom turned around and she did not know that she was at the crossing line so this guy passes by and gets mad. The mom tries to go back but she couldn't because there was a car behind. The mom then got to another accident and then Mona's sister thought that her mom was dead because her head was resting. Then a guy approaches the car and the mom and the two girls go out and then she throws the umbrella down the sewer. She is Chinese she does not need a umbrella she needs a raincoat she is not American. So basically, the white umbrella is bad because the Chinese do not need American stuff they are Chinese.
The narrator of this story is a 12 year old girl and she is from China. Her family is struggling in America so her mom AND dad have to work. She is ashamed of this because she wants to be rich and live the high life like her piano teacher, Mis Crosman. She wants a white umbrella she sees in the corner of the room and Miss Crosman gives it to her. she then says, "I wish you were my mother." and feels sad. On her way home, her, her sister and her mother get into a car accident and she realizes she loves her mom so much. The narrator goes to a sewer and dumps the umbrella down into it. (the umbrella was a symbol of rejection towards her mother)
