They were a way for the common people to entertain themselves, in much the same way that movies and TV do today. They also functioned somewhat like fables. Most Fairy Tales have a moral to them--if you are kind to everyone, you will live happily ever after.

The Grimm brothers, Wilhelm and Jakob, are famous for having collected and publishing stories (and some songs too). I don't think they were particularly known for TELLING the stories. Rather, they found people who knew the stories, got those people to tell them, and after listening, they put the stories down on paper.
