Yes. You would need to drive pilings i.e., creosote treated timber or steel into the earth until you hit refusal (by hitting hard pan, shale, rock, etc.) You can determine the required depth needed to drive the piles by first experimenting using a truck mounted geotechnical drill rig equipped with an auger. Once you have determined the depth of refusal (or near refusal) of the soil using a drill rig equipped with an auger then you would need to have a professional engineer make calculations for you to provide you with the number of piles needed and this is based upon the loads of your building. Basically, the piles retain the skin friction against the soils therefore the correct diameter of the piles needs to be calculated by your professional engineer.
