It depends on what the underlying coin is made of. If it's a base-metal coin the gold is so thin it adds virtually no value because it would cost more to remove than its metal value. If the coin is silver or some other precious metal you at least have that metal's value. Finally, depending on what the item is, there are sometimes specialty/niche collectors who'll pay more for one of these items, but usually only if it's in its original packaging.
