Turkish People In America
Turkish people are not so different from other people but their are cultural differences that I will explain. Breakfast is different than your typical milk and cereal or breakfast here and families still get around the table to eat it. It always includes some form of bread, slices of multigrain, homebaked bread or even bagels and bread is highly esteemed in Turkish households. Jelly's, a jelly you don't see here is a jelly made from certain leaves that are better than it sounds. Hard boiled eggs, "Zeytans" olives, "Peynir" in the form of soft cheese, feta or homemade cheese. Sometimes it can include meat but usually breakfast is fairly light but it can include beef salami cut into slices. And always "Ceyir!"-- here called tea. Another thing is that you rarely see the condiments like ketchup, mayonnaise or butter at breakfast time.
Turkish people are very hospitable people and it is very common for one family to have one or many other families over for dinners. This is prevalent around holidays like "Ramazan", or other Islamic holidays and those centered around marriages.
Some families are involved with their local Turkish organizations who host parades and barbecues and what Im trying to say here is that social functions are common among Turkish families. Or when a family member visits from Turkey or when their is a funeral or when their is some other occurence. For Ramadan holiday it is tradition for many families to make rounds from one family to another to visit and catch up within the month. This is something I have always admired because even young adults continue to do this whether they want to or not. The women will usually be scurrying around to treat their guest with baklava, helva (a dessert), 'cey', dolma (stuffed grape leaves with rice) or dried fruits. It is a honor to be able to treat your guest in Islamic tradition and it is thought that you will be rewarded highly for it in the next life.
In Turkish households that practice Islam it is common for them to go off into a separate room to pray several times a day and when guest are over they will do this together if they are Muslim, do not be scared of this if you are not familiar with it as this is just a normal occurence in Turkish Islamic households and its not done to exclude you in any way.
Most Turkish households will have Turkish television, the TRT network being one of the most common ones in the states (with subscription). I cannot say this is the same for all households but from my experience television is secondary and when the television is on its being listened to while chores are done around the house. Im sure this must vary.
This description varys and is not in any way to represent all Turkish people and should only be used to give a general idea.
