The only coin coming close to that description is the 1890 Crown (Five Shillings).
The obverse features the Jubilee bust of Queen Victoria wearing a smallish crown with a veil, ear rings and a necklace. The legend reads VICTORIA D:G: BRITT: REG:F:D:.
The reverse features Pistrucci's "St. George and the Dragon" with the year at bottom.
The edge is milled and the coin is 38.6 mm in diameter and weighs 28.35 grams, significantly larger and much heavier than a Penny of the same period.
These coins are made from sterling silver, but may have taken on a darker tone, possibly almost to black, due to excessive handling or exposure to moisture.

gold bronze black
The Canadian dollar coin is the colour of bronze, since that's what it is plated with. But it's not the dark-brown colour of oxidized bronze familiar from statuary, but a bright gold colour similar to brass.
It'll have a kind of brown redish colour to it that's the way I identify bronze
