People went to plays, operas and funny shows called vaudeville that played in theaters. They went to Buffalo Bill's Wild West show with its hundreds of horses. There were canoe races and Water Polo games. In the winter people would have sleighing parties and races between iceboats and trains. Rich people went coaching. This riding around in a fancy coach or they sailed on fancy yachts in rivers. People went out to eat ( no fast food was invented yet) and they went to the drugstore to sit at the soda fountain. They could get a ice cream soda for a dime. Many people played pianos and sang. Sheet music was sold with the words and music to the latest tunes. People also liked to dance or go to an amusement park, the zoo or a museum. Chess and checkers were played by children and so was kick the can, mumblety peg, tiddlywinks's, Parcheesi, Ping Pong. Girls liked dolls and in 1880 Edison had invented the first talking doll. Movies were just getting started and they had no sound. They were in black and white. The main sports was Basketball ( invented 1891) and it was played with a soccer ball with two baskets. Volleyball was a new game and there was Baseball, bowling, tennis, football, boxing, golf, archery and skating.
