The image on the back of the Canadian Dollar coin is that of a Canadian Loon, a waterbird native to Canada. Hence, the coins are often refered to as "Loonies."
As a point of interest, the Canadian Two Dollar coin is sometimes refered to as a "Toonie" (or, less commonly, "Two-nie") although it has no waterfowl imagery at all (Toonies have an image of a polar bear on the back).
Both the Loonie and the Toonie have a portrait of Queen Elizabeth the Second on the front.
It was also a little bit derogatory, because when first proposed many Canadians were a little resistant to the idea of a dollar coin and therefore considered it a little bit nuts or 'loonie'.

Currently we have a 1 dollar coin, We call it the Loonie as the first version released had a Loon on one side. Just to prove we like our little joke, when they introduced the 2 dollar coin we called it the toonie ( Two-nie )
