If the plea is in self-defense, you cannot be found guilty of Assault. UNLESS - the self-defense turned into an Assault against the other person. If THAT'S what happened -you are only allowed to defend yourself strongly enough to PREVENT the continuance of the attack, not to extract revenge too. Just because the other person threw the first punch does not give you legal right to turn around and beat him to a pulp.
