If you notice that when they hit someone with the sledge hammer they usually put their hand over the hammer part. and they know how to do it so that they don't acutally hurt the guy or gal. They are trained at this stuff...

Not really, but i would recommend using the sledge hammer to get rid of rocks, then use the pickaxe to get the rest away and uncover the jewels. Hope this helps.
