The United States does not legally recognize any diference between men and woman in any way, self defence or not. So no, it is legal. Wether that person was capable to cause injury to yourself/others enought to provoke an act of self defence is a different matter.

However, the best option would be to get as far away from that woman as you possibly can without actually having to make any physical contact. This option can help prevent injury to either you and the possible law suit. Other than that small act of self defense, a man should NEVER hit a woman. Under NO circumstance.
