The stone walls you see in and around Lexington were built by Irish Immigrants when they came to Central Kentucky. There is an abundance of limestone here (which is what makes the bluegrass so great for the thoroughbreds). You can tell the original fences because they were constructed with no mortar. Currently some of these fences are being re-habilitated due to road-widenings or breaking down over time. Some of these are put together with mortar but there is currently a group of University of Kentucky students studying the original art the Irish immigants used and are rebuilding the fences with no mortar.
