While most battles were fought with the traditional European style of standing on either side of a field and blasting away at each other, the Confederates became masters at ambush and guerrilla warfare. The Union army was more traditional in their way of battle. The Confederates however, were very fond of sending out smaller groups of soldiers to hide in the brush along road sides and take out a much larger battalion. There were also many civilians along the boarder states that identified with the Confederacy. These people took it upon themselves to take up arms without military guidance. They would go out and straight up murder soldiers or other civilians.
