A combat arms generalist is someone who has achieved a certain ranking in the United States Army. The combat arms generalist could perform several different duties depending on the area of work that he or she has been assigned to. Before anyone can become a combat arms generalist, they must first become an officer.
Prerequisites
To eventually be eligible to serve as a combat arms generalist, a soldier must begin as a commissioned officer. This career path includes training in basic course, branch duty assignments, an optional Captains Career Course, work in a functional area of choice, and branch qualification. This process usually takes about 8 years to complete. Officers who complete the 8 year training successfully will be eligible for work as combat arms generalists if that is the career path that they choose. Some officers may choose to work in other areas depending on their skills and interests.
Job Duties
Combat arms generalists are assigned to posts that are not branch specific or function specific. Classified as 02A officers, combat arms generalists are posted to assignments that utilize their specific skills as officers. The positions require a certain level of proven ability in specific areas that can be beneficial to the army. Many combat arms generalists are put to work in teaching positions, such as ROTC staff or USMA staff. Their special knowledge and ability to deliver a message in a clear and concise manner makes them ideal candidates to train the next level of officer candidates.
Pay Scale
There is no set standard pay scale for a combat arms generalist. Military officers are paid due to their seniority and rank. Much of the salary of a military officer is not strictly through a paycheck. Military officers receive benefits that civilian workers do not receive. They are eligible for inexpensive housing, federal benefits, inexpensive shopping in special stores, education benefits, and several other special pay incentives. Everyone who is in the military receives these special benefits as part of their overall compensation package. Military housing, food, clothing, and travel benefits can ease the financial strain that a smaller paycheck would bring to a family that is not in the military.
