Any acting school that is worth its salt will give its students instruction in how to put together a winning headshot and resume package as well as instruction in the art of acting.
In today's acting world, where actors are brought in to audition sometimes solely on the strength of their headshots, the importance of having a good headshot cannot be stressed enough. A good headshot is, furthermore, not one that is merely a pretty picture of the actor but is, rather, one that captures the essence of the actor and that gives a clear indication of the types of roles he or she should be auditioning for.
The first step to obtaining a good set of headshots is picking the right photographer, and experienced acting teachers will be able to refer a first-time actor to a good photographer whose services won't be beyond the student's budget. Not all photographers are for all actors, however, and, while leading man and lady types may require studio portraits, character actors would do better with more gritty, real pictures.
Acting schools should also give the student presented with 250-plus new pictures input on which five or six photographs to choose as their main headshots. Different looks should be subtly portrayed, and headshots shouldn't just be several pictures of the same actor in different costumes. Each actor should also choose a main commercial and a main theatrical picture, and these will usually be submitted to casting directors for commercial and theatrical auditions respectively.
A student's teachers should also give advice on whether pictures should be color corrected or cropped - cropping is extremely important in an industry where casting directors see only thumbnail sized photos through online submissions - and should also assist a student with uploading the chosen headshots onto the correct online casting websites. Headshots should also be updated regularly, particularly if the actor's appearance has changed in any major way as casting directors who are confronted with an actor who doesn't look like his headshot won't call him in again.
Acting schools may concentrate on teaching students Meisner rather than headshot appraisal, but both skills are, in fact, equally as important.
