If you publish it or sell the copyrights, you will recieve money. If you're drawing art, the author may (or may not) pay you for your services. Don't expect your series to make a ton of money; it won't (at first). Just do the best you can and find a good publisher that's willing to risk it!

Watched a documentary on this a few years ago. Seem to remember at about series 3 they all made a stand to get paid completely evenly which carried on to the last series, not that I remember what the actual amounts were.
