Manga is very popular internationally, because manga is like comic, except it is drawn by mangakas (people who draw manga, e.g. ai yazawa) mostly in Asia. People have their own opinions of manga - some hate manga and some love manga. (BONUS: A person who is obsessed with manga and anime is called and 'otaku'. e.g. I'm an otaku)

It's like a virus, once it was released the majority of the world became addicted to it.

There are many funny ways people get exposed to manga.

For example, I got introduced to manga when I typed in the wrong letters on Google Search.

There came :Fruits Basket

I was like "What is that??" So I tried it out and now it's a wonderful experience.

If you never experienced manga, you should hurriedly try it now because if you don't, you'll miss out so much fun and laughter.

It's hard to find this answer, isn't it?! I'm doing a speech on manga, so I searched and nothing good came up :( So I thouth bout' it really hard and this is why I think it's important Japan and other places:

Manga reflects several aspects of the normal life of Japanese society such as teenager's life, school, politics, family and other social problems. Researchers and experts sometimes study Manga to understand social issues. Additionally, in the very conservative Japanese society, Manga provides opportunities to openly criticise and challenge the figure of authority represented by parents, teachers, politicians and even the police.
