First you have to remove the panel from the bottom of the dash board to be able to get to the steering column bolts. Then, disconnect all of the wiring harnesses from the steering column. After this, go underneath the truck and disconnect the shifter linkage from the transmission. You can then remove the four bolts that hold the column up. Then, carefully slide the column out. Once the shifter linkage is against the firewall, rotate the column until you can pull the linkage through the opening in the firewall.
Try either at the lower end of steering column or attached to the linkage on the transmission
To adjust the automatic transmission linkage on a 1989 Ford Econoline 150, first, ensure the vehicle is in park and securely raised. Locate the adjustment rod connected to the transmission and the lever on the steering column. Loosen the adjustment nut slightly, then move the gear selector through the range of gears while making sure the linkage aligns properly with the park position. Once aligned, retighten the adjustment nut to secure the linkage in place.

The component that connects the steering linkage to the steering gearbox is the steering column. This column transmits the driver's input from the steering wheel to the gearbox, allowing for the translation of rotational motion into the linear motion needed to turn the vehicle's wheels. Additionally, the steering column may include universal joints or couplings to accommodate any misalignment and provide flexibility in the steering system.
To convert a regular steering column to a telescoping steering wheel in a 1970 Mercury Eliminator, you'll need to source a compatible telescoping steering column, typically from a later model vehicle or aftermarket supplier. Remove the existing steering column, ensuring to disconnect the wiring and steering linkage. Install the new telescoping column, making sure to properly connect the wiring and secure the steering linkage. Finally, install the telescoping steering wheel, adjusting it to your preferred position.
