Changing the starter on 1984 thru 1989 Toyota Vans is super easy. 1. Disconnect the negative battery cable (battery located in floorboard behind driver's seat). 2. Locate starter, underneath vehicle on the passenger side just behind and below passenger seat. 3. Using a 14mm ratchet with 3 or 4 inch extender remove both bolts holding the starter in place. 4. Unplug control wire (using small screw driver) and with a 12mm wrench disconnect positive battery cable, both on the starter. As usual, replacement is reverse of removal. 5. Enjoy the next 300,000 miles of driving still left in your unstoppable 3YEC or 4YEC Toyota Van engine!

Tercel starters are a gear reduction type starteer and are pretty reliable, what usually goes wrong with them is the conact points inside the solenoid, which are replaceable.
