Synchromesh is what's also know as "granny shifting". When you're ready to change a gear, you push in the clutch, push the shifter into the next gear, and let off the clutch. If you're in a heavy duty truck equipped with such a transmission (such as the Volvo with their 14 speed synchromesh transmission), DO NOT try floating these - the synchronizer gears are very sensitive, and you WILL wreck that transmission. Additionally, you only want to push down far enough to allow the shifter to disengage - as with an unsynchronized transmission, pushing the clutch all the way to the floor will engage the clutch brake, eventually causing it to burn out.

How do you shift gears in a Volvo truck?

Depends on what you have. If you have a Volvo outside of North America, it has a synchromesh transmission. Volvo synchromesh transmissions are extremely rare in North America, and they'll more often have Eaton-Fuller twin countershift unsynchronized transmissions, where you have to manually make up for the lack of a synchronizer gear.
