Varies state to state, a lot of it has to do with safety functions. But if you modified your car, upgraded exhaust, headers etc. You have to make sure that they do not have stamped, a sticker or a place where it says "Off Road Use Only" or something along those lines. In some states, one example being Missouri if you are suspected of street racing, they will sometimes search your car parts for those stickers, stamps, etc. And when you go to get it inspected, your mechanic should be able to tell you if its legal or not.
