As far as the truth, now i am not sure. Where i get my information is from the military soldier board study guides. The soldier boards were held to distinguish the soldier with the most knowledge in all military categories including rules, history, standards and procedures to name a few. Boards were also played a part in deciding if a soldier should be promoted in the ranks of non-commissioned officer (NCO) E5-E10. I have been in many soldier boards including two for soldier of the year for Descom and 8th army command. I can tell you that question was asked on almost every board and what i was given to study and the answer i gave on these boards were this. A truck is the mechanism at the top of a military flagpole that supports the upper wheel through which the rope that raises and lowers the flag is controlled. What is inside it are a razor blade, a match, and a .45 caliber bullet. The razor is for cutting out the stars of the flag the match is for burning the field and the 45 was the last Act of defiance towards the enemy by taking your own life as commanding officer. That is what I read in the manuals it is what I gave as my answers on the boards and whether it is really true or not I really don't know.
Did you mean "holds the flag" question is confusing
The ball on top of the flag pole is call the truck
a flag pole,a truck,
A truck
I was informed that the top of a flag pole was called a truck. Now I learn that it is not a truck but a finial. The turck is the mechanism that connects the finial to the flag pole. IS this correct and where do these words come from.

The truck is the name for the round ball on top of the flagpole. It serves to keep the flag from getting caught if wind flips it over the pole. There are a number of legends about what is inside the truck- a match to burn the flag, a razor blade to cut up the flag, a pistol cartridge for the last soldier, etc. Sorry- the ball is hollow. Nothing in there.
It is not a myth it is just that this is only done on a military base as to defend our rights.
